CODA-accredited programs are ubiquitous in California, as there are currently 24 programs throughout the State. A typical dental assisting program, which consists of both coursework and hands-on experiences in the clinical and administrative aspects of dental assisting, can be completed in less than a year. Training, registration, and permits for dental assistants also depend on the level at which they are working: Unlicensed Dental Assistants Unlicensed dental assistants in California are permitted to perform basic dental duties and responsibilities under the guidance of a licensed dentist. Dental assistant employers must ensure that these allied healthcare professionals hold Basic Life Support (BLA) certification and that they have completed an American Red Cross or American Heart Association-approved course in BLS, a Board-approved course in infection control, and a Board-approved course in the California Dental Practice Act within a year. Unlicensed Dental Assistant โ To be able to work as an Unlicensed Dental Assistant in California you are going to have to complete a training in the California Dental Practice Act, attain a bls certificate at a course that is approved by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association and in infection control within one year from employment start date. All training has to be approved by the Dental Board of California. (RDA) Registered Dental Assistant โ To be get fully licensed as an RDA in California, you will be required to complete all training necessary to be a Unlicensed Dental Assisted, and you must also show that you either have at least 15 months of work experience or that you have successfully graduated from a CA Dental Board approved RDA training program (we list them below). On top of all that, you will also be required to finish CA Dental Board approved training in coronal polishing and in radiation safety, then you must successfully take and pass the state of California's practical and written tests and the California test in law and ethics.

Orthodontic Assistant Permit Holder To become an orthodontic assistant in California, dental assistants must hold a permit to do so. To qualify for an orthodontic assistant permit, candidates must be an RDA or an RDAEF and complete the following; Courses in infection control and the California Dental Practice Act approved by the Board At least one year of dental assisting experience An orthodontic written exam An orthodontic assistant course approved by the Board An American Red Cross or American Heart Association-approved course in Basic Life Support Once the above requirements are met, candidates must apply for an Orthodontic Assistant permit through the Dental Board of California. National Certification in Dental Assisting Following the completion of a CODA-accredited dental assisting program, dental assistants may pursue national certification through the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), which displays to employers and colleagues a level of commitment to the profession and to advancement in the field.
This certificate is a requirement of the California Dental Board for unlicensed Dental Assistants as well as Dental Assistants seeking to become RDAs or renew their RDA License and/or perform coronal polishing on patients in a dental office. This is a two-day course: Day One: Lecture, Lab, One Coronal Polish Clinical Patient Day Two: Written Exam, Clinical Exam, Two Patients Pit and Fissure Sealant Certification After completing this course, the graduate will earn a certificate in Pit and Fissure Sealants. This certificate is a requirement of the California Dental Board for unlicensed Dental Assistants and for those Dental Assistants who are seeking to become an RDA, renew their RDA License and/or perform Pit and Fissure Sealants on patients in a dental office. Day One: Lecture, Lab, Clinical Patients / Eight Sealants Day Two: Written exam, Clinical Exam patients โ Eight Sealants Infection Control Course 8 Hours After completing this course, the graduate will earn a certificate in Infection Control 8-Hours.

Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) 800 Hour Program After completing this nine-month comprehensive course, the graduate will be ready to start work as a Dental Assistant and sit for the Registered Dental Assistant Licensing Exam. Our Registered Dental Assistant program is California Dental Board-approved which enables graduates to be eligible to take their licensing exam immediately upon completion of the course. Registered Dental Assistants are approved to perform more job duties and they receive higher compensation than an unlicensed Dental Assistant. This course includes lecture, lab, clinical practice, books, scrubs, six certifications, internship experience, job placement assistance, and a certificate of completion.

Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Function (RDAEF) RDAs must be license as a Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions (RDAEF) to perform a number of expanded duties. To become licensed as an RDAEF, RDAs must: Complete a course in extended functions approved by the Board Complete an application of pit and fissure sealants course approved by the Board Pass state clinical and practical exam and a written examination approved by the Board Upon meeting the above requirements, RDAs must apply for licensure as an RDAEF through the Dental Board of California.
